Lisa Dwan
Actress, Director, Writer & ProfessorLisa Dwan was born on November 25, 1977, in Coosan, Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. Her journey in the performing arts began with ballet, not acting. At the remarkable age of 12, she performed alongside the legendary ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev in "Coppélia" in Dublin. At 14, Dwan left school after earning a prestigious scholarship to the Dorothy Stevens School of Ballet in Leeds, England.
Lisa Dwan is internationally recognized as one of the world's leading interpreters of Samuel Beckett's theatrical works. Her relationship with Beckett's plays began when she was mentored by Billie Whitelaw, whom Beckett himself called his "perfect actress." Her performance in "Not I" is particularly legendary—a 15-minute monologue performed at breakneck speed in near-total darkness.
